The immortelle is a perennial which belongs to the genus Helichrysum, family Asteraceae, and comprises about six hundred different plant species widespread all over the world. In the last few years, the immortelle has become a plant of great importance to the pharmaceutical industry due to its anti-age properties. The immortality of immortelle is already manifested in its habitat, it grows on karst and dry terrains where only rare plants of that quality can survive. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile of immortelle volatile compounds, that is isolate volatile compounds from plant material and determine the composition and content of these compounds. The samples of Dalmatian wild-growing immortelle were collected at two different locations, in Kaštel Stari on Kozjak mountain and Plano near city of Trogir. Immortelle volatile compounds were isolated by three methods, hydrodistillation, commonly used method of essential oil isolation, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and static headspace extraction (HS). Analysis of all samples was carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Terpenes are qualitatively and quantitatively the most important ingredients of essential oils and headspaces of immortelle. The major constituents of immortelle essential oils, regardless on the location of plant material gathering, were terpene hydrocarbons, namely monoterpene hydrocarbon - α pinene (10,9 % and 25,1 %) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons γ-curcumene and ar-curcumene (together 10,1 % and 9,4 %) as well asmonoterpene ester neryl acetate (8,1 % and 10,2 %). The main constituent of both headspace samples (GCSPME method) was also α-pinene (23,5 % and 20,3 %). The dominant compound in immortelle headspaces (HS method) was α-pinene, 59,7 % in immortelle collected in Kaštela and 85,5 % in immortelle collected in Plano.
