Objectives: Qualitative determination of ingredients in cosmetic products using GC-MS method, as well as the comparison of the results with those declared on the product. In addition, another objective was to find a correlation between the price range and presence of certain ingredients in cosmetic products. Design: Experimental study Settings: Laboratory of toxicology, Department of pathology, medicine and cytology, University Hospital of Split Material and Methods: In this study, 30 creams and serums were chosen. Samples were divided in two categories according to price range, group 1- 14 products costing less than 200 kn, and group 2 – 16 products costing more than 200 kn. For analytic preparation we used 0,1 g of samples. Samples were extracted with the mix of organic dissolvents (chloroform : ethyl acetate : hexane = 1:1:1) and then were left to volatilize in digester. Analysis was performed by GC-MS method (gass chromatography-mass spectrometry). In order to compare the results, one of the samples was dissolved in pure acetonitrile. Results: Qualitative analysis of samples showed 13-35 ingredients detected by GC-MS method per sample, while individual declarations of products had 11-105 listed ingredients. All seven of the tested, potentially harmful and undesirable ingredients (butylhydroxytoluene, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclotetrasiloxane, benzophenone, triethanolamine and diethyl phthalate), were detected using qualitative analysis by GC-MS method, and all of them were detected in at least one tested sample. In 30 tested samples, 24 of them were positive for at least one tested undesirable ingredient. Between seven samples which had two or more undesirable ingredients detected, four of them belong to the group 2, and three of them in the group 1. In this work, deviation from declaration on products was proved using GC-MS method in 43% of samples. Comparing characteristic signals of chromatograms, it has been proved that choice of dissolvents does not affect final result. Conclusion: Price didn’t show correlation with matched declared and detected ingredients in products. More thorough analysis and studies are required to determine possibilities of detecting extremely low concentrations of the tested undesirable ingredients.
