Abstract
Prvi registrirani „medicinski med“ i danas jedan od najistraživanijih vrsta meda je manuka med. To je tamni, monoflorni med dobiven iz manuka biljke, Leptospermum scoparium, koja raste kao grm ili stablo na Novom Zelandu i u istočnoj Australiji. Fitokemikalije su tvari koje potječu iz biljaka s kojih pčele skupljaju nektar ili mednu rosu, a mogu povoljno utjecati na zdravlje čovjeka. Uspoređujući s drugim vrstama meda, manuka med sadrži najviše flavonoida i fe- nolnih kiselina koji djeluju kao antioksidansi te protuupalno, antiproliferativno i antimikrobno. Metilglioksal (MGO) je i do sto puta zastupljeniji u medu manuke, u usporedbi s drugim vrstama meda, te je odgovoran za njegov snažni antimikrobni učinak. Manuka med ima razne biološke učinke i široku primjenu u komplementarnoj, ali i u konvencionalnoj medicini. Djeluje antimikrobno na široki spektar bakterija, uključujući i multirezistentne sojeve, zahvaljujući svojoj pero- ksidnoj i neperoksidnoj aktivnosti. Snažan je antioksidans, djeluje protuupalno, imunostimulacijski, citotoksično te kao antivirotik, antimikotik i antihelmintik. Najznačajnija je njegova primjena u tretiranju inficiranih rana i opekotina. Pozitivno djeluje na gastrointestinalni trakt, središnji živčani sustav, kod kardiovaskularnih bolesti i komplikacija dijabetesa. Dobar je u očuvanju oralnog zdravlja, brzi je izvor energije kod sportaša te vrijedna nutritivna tvar u dječjoj prehrani.
Abstract (english)
The first registered „medicinal honey“ and today one of the most researched honeys is manuka honey. It is a dark, monofloral honey obtained from the manuka plant, Leptospermum scoparium, which grows as a bush or tree in New Zealand and eastern Australia. Phytochemicals are substances that originate from plants from which honey bees collect nectar or honeydew and they can benefit the human health. When comparing to other honeys, manuka honey contains the most flavono- ids and phenolic acids which are antioxidants and act anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative and antimicrobial. Methylglyoxal (MGO) is about hundredfold more present in manuka honey than in other honeys and is crucial for his strong antimicrobial action. Manuka honey exhibits various biological effects with an extensive application in complementary, but also in conventional medicine. It acts antimicrobial on a broad bacterial spectrum, including multiresistant strains, beca- use of its peroxide and non-peroxide activity. It is a strog antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, imunostimulating, cytotoxic but also antiviral, antifungal and antihelmintic agent. The most significant indication of manuka honey is in wound and burns treatment. It exhibits benefitial impacts on gastrointestinal tract, central nervous sytem, cardiovascular health and in diabetics, has a positive effect on reducing complications. It can be used for mainta- ining oral health, is a fast source of energy in sports and is a valuable nutritious substance in child's diet.
